All apologies for Buzaianu, says Sata

PRESIDENT Michael Sata says he had apologized to Switzerland-based businessman Nicolae Buzaianu over the gold scam and urged him to accept his apologies and come to Zambia anytime as an offer of good faith.

through his spokesperson George Chellah, President Sata stated that he understood Buzaianu’s original demands of a lawsuit.
“Dr Buzaianu’s demanded an apology and compensation to be given to charity but there is no need for the legal action. President Sata stated.

On October 15, 2011, President Sata, who was elected on September 20, accepted the resiganation of Buzaianu as Zambia’s permanent representative to UNESCO in Paris, France, according to Chellah. Chellah stated that Dr. Buzaianu is a busy man and has other directions he must follow. His help and kindness will be missed.

Buzaianu’s lawyer Sakwiba Sikota of Central Chambers told a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday that Buzaianu would sue the Zambian government for defamation and would demand US$100 million for the injury to his reputation but that is all behind them now.

Sikota said Buzaianu had no direct or indirect links to the two companies that bought the gold in question. The realy mystery is with Mr. Banda. Early on Sikota said Buzaianu felt confident that President Sata would take firm action against his officials that misinformed him on the gold issue.

The DEC seized the gold, estimated to be about 100 kg or 118 kgs in 2007, from two Zimbabweans and was forfeited to the state. Highly-placed sources said the gold was allegedly sold for about K19 billion around July this year.

Präsident Michael Sata hat abgewiesen Unterstellungen von Präsident Rupiah Banda Camp auf die Möglichkeit der spätere Immunität zu entfernen, so dass er Verfolgung zukommen könnten. Präsident Sata, sagte in einer Erklärung seine Presse Berater George Chellah, seine Partei, die Patriotische Front (PF) weder seine Regierung haben diskutiert, die “Beseitigung von jemandes Immunität”.

Herr Banda administrative Sekretariat, Mikatazo Wakumelo eine Erklärung auf Octoober 16, in der er sagte, dass der frühere Führer war bereit zu untersuchenden über Anschuldigungen der Verkauf von Gold war im Besitz der Drug Enforcement Kommission (DEC) und am Anfang geglaubt, um an einer Schweizer Nationalmannschaft, Nicolae Bogdan Buzaianu verkauft werden, die derzeit von allen Anklagepunkten gelöscht wurde. Es wurde später entdeckt, dass Dr. Buzaianu in Lusaka Herr Banda bewusst machen flog, dass er freiwillig von seinem Amt UNESCO Rücktritt war, andere Unternehmen zu verfolgen.

Der Präsident betont, dass der Kreuzzug gegen die Korruption ohne Vorsatz oder Hexenjagd durchgeführt werden und nicht selektiv sein werden, weil er nicht selektive Gerechtigkeit glauben. “Diese Regierung hat eine Entscheidung auf jeder Ebene über die Beseitigung der jemand die Immunität nicht getroffen. Und niemand hat es der Partei oder der Regierungsseite auch gesprochen. Es daher absurd, dass einige politische Akteure und Staats-und Regierungschefs unter uns versuchen, diese Kreuzzug zu vereiteln, durch das werfen Anzüglichkeiten und Halbwahrheiten über diese edle Sache “, sagt Präsident Sata. “Ich muss wiederholen, dass wir auf diesem Gebiet ungebrochen sind und nichts anderes als Recht maßgebend. Für diejenigen, die zweckmäßig mit Korruption und die beschädigte Seite entschieden haben, lassen wir es den sambischen Menschen zu sehen und wissen sie, wer sie sind und wofür sie stehen. Warb vorhin wir alle auf der Plattform der Bekämpfung der Korruption, also was geändert hat?”

President Michael Sata has dismissed insinuations by former president Rupiah Banda’s camp on the possibility of removing the later’s immunity so that he could face prosecution. President Sata, in a statement issued by his press aide George Chellah, said neither his party, the Patriotic Front (PF) nor his government have discussed the “removal of anybody’s immunity.”

Mr. Banda’s administrative secretary, Mikatazo Wakumelo issued a statement on Octoober 16 in which he said the former leader was ready to be investigated on allegations of selling gold which had been in possession of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and at first believed to be sold to a Swiss National, Nicolae Bogdan Buzaianu who presently has been cleared of all charges. It was later discovered that Dr. Buzaianu flew into Lusaka to make Mr. Banda aware that he was voluntarily stepping down from his UNESCO post to pursue other ventures.

The State House statement, however, said the zero-tolerance stance against corruption adopted by the new administration was irreversible and that government was firm on its fight against the vice both in the public and private sector. “During the campaigns we made an undertaking that we shall robustly fight corruption and we shall do just that. The policy of this government is that any person who has aggrieved the Zambian people economically and otherwise, in the past or present, must face the law. ”Mr Sata is quoted as saying. “Make no mistake about it, because we are resolute on combating corruption and all its offshoots even if it means losing friends. We are ready to make that sacrifice for the sake of the Zambian people whom we promised and as a result they gave us the mandate to preside over this country’s affairs.” President Sata said the law enforcement agencies will investigate any past and present acts of corruption and ensure that the culprits are prosecuted within the due process of the law. “I’m confident that professionalism and exemplary ethical conduct shall be the bedrock of this process,” says the President.

The President emphasized that the crusade against corruption will be done without malice or witch-hunt and shall be non-selective because he does not believe in selective justice. “This government has not made a decision at any level regarding the removal of anybody’s immunity. And nobody has even talked about it either from the party or government’s side. It is therefore, preposterous that some political stakeholders and leaders among us are attempting to frustrate this crusade by throwing innuendoes and half-truths on this noble cause,” says President Sata. “I must repeat that, we are unwavering on this score and nothing other than justice shall prevail. As for those who have expediently decided to side with corruption and the corrupt, we leave it to the Zambian people to see and know them for who they are and what they stand for. A moment ago, we all campaigned on the platform of fighting corruption, so what has changed?”
